Therefore, we can expect that next-generation core optical networks will require significant improvements in capacity and reconfigurability. The role of high-speed signal processing, both electronic and optical, will then become more critical. Recently, optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has drawn considerable attention, in which electronic signal processing is an essential part. On the other hand, all-optical techniques overcome the bandwidth limitation of electronics and are preferred for handling high-bit-rate exceeding hundreds of gigabit per second. In this talk, a brief review of the evolution of electrical and optical signal processing techniques will be given, along with a brief introduction of a few major research programs in the United States.
