内容摘要: Distributed consensus or agreement has been identified as a canoni
cal problem in both the distributed signal processing and control communitie
s. The problem lies at the core of the tasks of distributed synchronization,
distributed coordination of mobile autonomous agents, and distributed data
fusion in sensor networks. The prototypical example of a consensus problem i
s that of using local communication to compute the average of a set of scala
r values, measured or available at network nodes scattered throughout a moni
tored region. The two most widely studied algorithms for solving the average
consensus problem are distributed averaging and random gossip. The original
versions of these algorithms suffer from slow convergence for the communica
tion topologies commonly encountered in wireless networks (grids or random g
eometric graphs). In this talk, Professor Coates will discuss two strategies
for significantly accelerating the convergence rate. The first strategy inc
orporates a prediction step in distributed averaging, exploiting the typical
ly smooth nature of the convergence to the consensus value. The second strat
egy modifies random gossip, allowing each node to select its gossip-partner
to myopically maximize the migration towards consensus.

Mark Coates received the B.E. degree (first class honours) in computer syste
ms engineering from the University of Adelaide, Australia, in 1995, and a Ph
.D. degree in information engineering from the University of Cambridge, U.K.
, in 1999. He was awarded the Texas Instruments Postdoctoral Fellowship in 1
999 and was a research associate and lecturer at Rice University, Texas, fro
m 1999-2001. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
of McGill University (Montreal, Canada) in 2002, where he is currently an A
