I bank has lots of division, it depends on what you want to do: people say I banking representing the IBD division in I bank, doing mergers & acquisitions, corporate finance etc. Other departments in I bank include sales & trading, research, fixed income, structure... It really varies with different banks. Only IBD don't require too much finance background, but still, if you want to get into I bank, you have to at least have some ideas about M&A or read FT/WSJ everyday just to keep updating financial news. Main features that a potential candidates should possess include team player, detail-oriented, fast learner, willing to sacrifice personal time etc. Financial math students normally have better chance to get into banks like Credit Suisse quantitative research department(Probably because they know how to solve Blackshole's equation.. haha), and they also are very competitive IBD candidates. It's really hard to find an intern here in US this year only because the economy here sucks, a lot. I'm also worried about my summer internship. Those giant banks laid off a great number of people, Bear Stearns even got acquired by JP Morgan(They didn't do that good either). Right now I'm literally thinking about some unpaid job in VC or PE...
