讲座题目一:Mobile Networks As A Cloud Service主讲人:TarekTaleb博士
主持人:陶小峰教授时间:2014年5月7日(星期三)下午15:30—16:30地点:教三楼136报告厅报告摘要:Mobile operators are in need of means to cope with the ever-increasing mobile data traffic, introducing minimal additional capital expenditures on existing infrastructures, principally due to the falling Average Revenues per User (ARPU). Network vitalization and cloud computing techniques, along with the principles of the latter in terms of service elasticity, on-demand, and pay-per-use, could be important enablers for various mobile network enhancements and cost reduction. This keynote will touch upon the recent trends the mobile telecommunications market is experiencing, showcasing some of the emerging consumer products and services that are facilitating such trends. The keynote will also discuss the challenges these trends are representing to mobile network operators and highlight some short-term solutions. As a long term solution, the keynote will then touch upon the possibility of extending cloud computing beyond data centers towards the mobile end-user, providing end-to-end mobile connectivity as a cloud service. The keynote will introduce a set of technologies and methods for the on-demand provision of a decentralized and elastic mobile network as a cloud service over a distributed network of cloud-computing data centers. The novel business opportunities behind the envisioned mobile cloud architecture and service will be also discussed, considering various multi-stakeholder scenarios. The concept of Follow-Me-Cloud whereby not only data but also mobile services are intelligently following their respective users will be also introduced.

讲座题目二:Mobile Scaling Microblogging Services with Divergent Traffic Demands主讲人:Xiaoming Fu教授时间:2014年5月7日(星期三)下午16:30—17:30报告摘要:Today's microblogging services such as Twitter have long outgrown their initial designs as SMS-based social networks. Instead, a massive and steadily-growing user population of more than 100 million is using Twitter for everything from capturing the mood of the country to detecting earthquakes and Internet service failures. It is unsurprising that the traditional centralized client-server architecture has not scaled with user demand, leading to server overload and significant loss of availability. In this work, we argue that the divergence in usage models of microblogging services can best be addressed using complementary mechanisms, one that provides reliable messages between friends, and another that delivers events from popular celebrities and media outlets to their millions of followers. We present Cuckoo, a new microblogging system that offloads processing and bandwidth costs away from a small centralized server base while ensuring reliable message delivery. We use a 20-day Twitter availability measurement to guide our design, and trace-driven emulation of 30,000 Twitter users to evaluate our Cuckoo prototype. Compared to a centralized approach, Cuckoo achieves 30-50% server bandwidth savings and 50-60% CPU load reduction, while guaranteeing reliable message delivery. 主讲人简介: Prof. Xiaoming Fu (M'02 - SM'09) received his bachelor degree in automatic instrumentation in 1994 and master degree in computer science in 1997, respectively, both from Northeastern University, China, and his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China in 2000. He was then a research staff at the Technical University Berlin until joining the faculty at the University of Goettingen, Germany in 2002, where he has been a professor in computer science and heading the Computer Networks Group since 2007. Prof. Fu's research interests include network architectures, protocols, and applications. He is currently an editorial board member of IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, Elsevier Computer Networks, and Computer Communications, and has served on the organization or program committees of leading conferences such as INFOCOM, ICNP, ICDCS, MOBICOM, MOBIHOC. He has served as secretary (2008-2010) and vice chair (2010-2012) of the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committee on Computer Communications (TCCC), and chair (2011-2013) of the Internet Technical Committee (ITC) of the IEEE Communications Society and the Internet Society. He has been involved in FP6 ENABLE, VIDIOS, Daidalos-II and MING-T projects and is the coordinator of FP7GreenICN, MobileCloud and CleanSky projects. Prof. Fu is the recipient of the IEEE LANMAN 2013 Best Paper Award and the 2005 University of Goettingen Foundation Award for Exceptional Publications by Young Scholars.
