FRANKFURT (AFX) - Siemens AG chief executive Klaus Kleinfeld told the daily Bild the management board voted yesterday to create a 30 mln eur fund to assist staff at its old mobile phone unit, now owned by BenQ Corp.
The German unit of BenQ said last week it would file for insolvency after the parent company decided to stop injecting funds into the loss-making business.
'We think that BenQ's course of action is unacceptable and we want to help as much as we possibly can,' Kleinfeld told the newspaper.
He also said that the management board decided not to accept its 2007 salary increase, as a sign of solidarity with the affected workers.
The roughly 5.0 mln eur worth of salary increases will also go to the affected workers.
Kleinfeld denied that Siemens gave BenQ its mobile phone business last year with the understanding that it would likely become insolvent at some point.
'It had always been our goal to create a solid future for the Siemens mobile phone business,' Kleinfeld told the newspaper.
'We gave financial resources, patents and even the Siemens brand in order to make this possible.'
Kleinfeld said this was done with the understanding that BenQ would strengthen and even expand the German mobile handset production operations.
Now that BenQ has decided to close the operations, Kleinfeld said Siemens might take legal action against the Taiwanese company.
'They broke their promise,' Kleinfeld told the newspaper.
'We are examining all possible legal steps that we can take against BenQ.'
