Manipulations of multi-frequency waves and signals via multi-partition asynchronous space-time-coding digital metasurface Wang, Si Ran, etc. NATURE COMMUNICATIONS, 2023, 14(1) Manipulations of multiple carrier frequencies are especially important in a variety of fields like radar detection and wireless communications. In conventional radio-frequency architecture, the multi-frequency control is implemented by microwave circuits, which are hard to integrate with antenna apertures, thus bringing the problems of expensive system and high power consumption. Previous studies demonstrate the possibility to jointly control the multiple harmonics using space-time-coding digital metasurface, but suffer from the drawback of inherent harmonic entanglement. To overcome the difficulties, we propose a multi-partition asynchronous space-time-coding digital metasurface (ASTCM) to generate and manipulate multiple frequencies with more flexibility. We further establish an ASTCM-based transmitter to realize wireless communications with frequency-division multiplexing, where the metasurface is responsible for carrier-wave generations and signal modulations. The direct multi-frequency controls with ASTCM provides a new avenue to simplify the traditional wireless systems with reduced costs and low power consumption. Communications with guaranteed bandwidth and low latency using frequency-referenced multiplexing Zhou, Zichuan, etc. NATURE ELECTRONICS, 2023, 6(9): 694–702 Emerging cloud applications such as virtual reality and connected car fleets demand guaranteed connections, as well as low and stable latency, to edge data centres. Currently, user–cloud communications rely on time-scheduled data frames through tree-topology fibre networks, which are incapable of providing guaranteed connections with low or stable latency and cannot be scaled to a larger number of users. Here we show that a frequency-referenced multiplexing method can provide guaranteed bandwidth and low latency for time-critical applications. We use clock and optical frequency synchronization, enabled by frequency comb and signal processing techniques, to provide each user with dedicated optical bandwidth, creating scalable user–cloud upstream communications. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate a frequency-division multiplexing system servicing up to 64 users with an aggregate bandwidth of 160 GHz, exhibiting a data rate of up to 4.3 Gbps per user (240.0 Gbps aggregated capacity considering a 200 GHz wavelength band) with a high receiver sensitivity of –35 dBm. Metasurface-enabled smart wireless attacks at the physical layer Wei, Menglin, etc. NATURE ELECTRONICS, 2023, 6: 610–618 In current wireless communication systems, sophisticated attack strategies at the physical layer-the electromagnetic wave signals carrying the information-leave traces in the physical environment, which mean such attacks are typically detectable. This may not be the case for future-sixth generation and beyond-wireless networks, whose current vision relies on the concept of smart radio environments, which use metasurfaces to manipulate wave signals in unconventional ways. Here we report metasurface-enabled smart wireless attacks at the physical layer. We illustrate both passive and active operational modes. In the passive mode, an attacker is capable of eavesdropping on the wireless information transfer of a target by controlling the programmable metasurface, without actively radiating any signal. In the active mode, an attacker can eavesdrop as well as falsify the wireless communications by sending deceptive information to the target. In both operational modes, the detectability of the attacker can be minimized. As a proof of concept, we create an attacker prototype working in the Wi-Fi band at around 2.4 GHz, and demonstrate its ability to hack wireless data streams. Our results highlight potential security threats for next-generation wireless networks, and emphasize the need to develop suitable mitigation strategies and specific security protocols at an early stage. A Survey of Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence for 6G Wireless Communications Zuo, Yiping, etc. IEEE COMMUNICATIONS SURVEYS AND TUTORIALS, 2023, Early Access The research on the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications for the development of future mobile communication networks has been officially launched around the world. 6G networks face multifarious challenges, such as resource-constrained mobile devices, difficult wireless resource management, high complexity of heterogeneous network architectures, explosive computing and storage requirements, privacy and security threats. To address these challenges, deploying blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) in 6G networks may realize new breakthroughs in advancing network performances in terms of security, privacy, efficiency, cost, and more. In this paper, we provide a detailed survey of existing works on the application of blockchain and AI to 6G wireless communications. More specifically, we start with a brief overview of blockchain and AI. Then, we mainly review the recent advances in the fusion of blockchain and AI, and highlight the inevitable trend of deploying both blockchain and AI in wireless communications. Furthermore, we extensively explore integrating blockchain and AI for wireless communication systems, involving secure services and Internet of Things (IoT) smart applications. Particularly, some of the most talked-about key services based on blockchain and AI are introduced, such as spectrum management, computation allocation, content caching, and security and privacy. Moreover, we also focus on some important IoT smart applications supported by blockchain and AI, covering smart healthcare, smart transportation, smart grid, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Moreover, we thoroughly discuss operating frequencies, visions, and requirements from the 6G perspective. We also analyze the open issues and research challenges for the joint deployment of blockchain and AI in 6G wireless communications. Lastly, based on lots of existing meaningful works, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey of blockchain and AI in 6G networks. We hope this survey can shed new light on the research of this newly emerging area and serve as a roadmap for future studies.
