Using current technology it is possible to track the pitch and timing of a singer with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Such measures give interesting insights concerning pitch memory and production, but are not very informative of the perceived skill of the singer. The aim of this project is to design and quantify measures of singing skill, and to implement algorithms which follow a performance and rate how well it was executed. The project is multidisciplinary, involving digital signal processing, music perception, psychoacoustics, and music theory. The student would investigate methods of estimating singing pitch (with or without accompaniment), articulation, timbre, vibrato, timing, and how these relate to the perception of listeners. It is hoped that this project will make significant contributions to the scientific understanding of singing. The outputs of the work could also find application in an educational setting, for providing feedback to singing students, or in entertainment, such as karaoke software or singing competitions. He leads the Music Informatics area of the Centre for Digital Music, and is President of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (2014-15). Project 2: Computer-Aided Transcription and Editing of Drums and Cymbals in Audio Recordings. The accurate automatic transcription of drums and cymbals is an unsolved engineering problem whose solution could form the basis for advanced audio-based drum editing in music production. This PhD project will have two main aims: (a) to extend state-of-the-art drum transcription systems to include a wider range of drums and cymbals and to increase their performance by exploiting machine-learned musical context; (b) to implement user-informed source separation and re-synthesis techniques to aid audio-based drum editing. Depending on the interest of the student, (b) can be replaced by the application of automatic drum transcription to the study of drumming styles. The project will suit a student who has a strong background in digital signal processing and maths/machine learning as well as a passion for drums/percussion (ideally a musician).
