Ultrawide bandwidth (UWB) transmission systems have gained significant interest in the scientific, commercial and military sectors following a ruling by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) concerning UWB emission masks. This ruling allows for coexistence with traditional and protected radio services and enables the potential use of UWB transmission without allocated spectrum. Wide bandwidth provides fine delay resolution, robustness against fading, and superior obstacle penetration, making UWB technology a viable candidate for reliable communications in challenging environments, such as dense urban and forests. The large bandwidth and obstacle penetration capabilities also make UWB an ideal technology to provide location-awareness in GPS-challenged environments. This talk will present a brief technical overview of UWB communication networks, and related research performed at MIT. We place particular emphasis on location-awareness, which is of great importance in many applications, including social networking, search-and-rescue operations, and asset tracking.

Moe Win is an Associate Professor at the Laboratory for Information & Decision Systems (LIDS), Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to joining LIDS, he spent 5 years at AT&T Research Laboratories and 7 years at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He served as the chair (2004-2006) and secretary (2002-2004) for the Radio Communications Committee of the IEEE Communications Society. Dr. Win is currently an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. He served as Area Editor for Modulation and Signal Design (2003-2006), Editor for Wideband Wireless and Diversity (2003-2006), and Editor for Equalization and Diversity (1998-2003), all for the IEEE Transactions on Communications. He received several awards including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from the United States White House and 2006 IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award “for pioneering contributions to ultra-wide band communications science and technology.” Professor Win is an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer and elected Fellow of the IEEE, cited “for contributions to wideband wireless transmission.”
Henk Wymeersch is a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He obtained the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2005 from Ghent University, Belgium. In 2005-2006, Henk Wymeersch was a postdoctoral fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation at MIT. In 2006 he won the Alcatel Bell Scientific Award for his Ph.D. thesis, and in 2007 he won the Best Paper Award at the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (with Yuan Shen and Moe Win). He is a member of the IEEE, Associate Editor for the IEEE Communications Letters, and author of the recently published book from Cambridge University Press “Iterative Receiver Design.” His research interests include algorithm design for wireless transmission, statistical inference and iterative processing.
Dr.Chia-Chin Chong received the B.Eng. degree with first class honors from the University of Manchester, Manchester, U.K., and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, U.K., both in electronics and electrical engineering, in 2000 and 2003, respectively.
She received the Joseph Higham Prize and the GEC-Marconi Prize from The University of Manchester in 2000 for academic excellence and outstanding performance. She also awarded the IEE Prize and the IEE Vodafone Research Scholarship by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) in 1999 and 2001, respectively, the Richard Brown Scholarship from The University of Edinburgh in 2002, the IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB) Best Paper Award and the DoCoMo USA Labs President Award in 2006. She was honored with the Merit of Certificate of The Outstanding Young Malaysian Award 2006 by Junior Chamber International (JCI) and Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia under the category “Scientific and Technological Development”.
Currently, she serve as an Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, Kluwer Wireless Personal Communications and the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking (JWCN). She has served as the Lead Guest-Editor for the Special Issue on “Millimeter Wave Wireless Communication Systems” in the EURASIP JWCN and the Guest Editor for the Special Issue on “Cooperative Localization in Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks” in the EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing, the TPC Co-Chair for the Wireless Communications Symposium of the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2008 in Beijing, China, the Publicity Co-Chair for the IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) 2008 in Cannes, French Riviera, France, and the Sponsorship Chair for the International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CrownCom) 2008 in Singapore. She is currently also the Chair for the DG-EVAL Channel Model standardization group within the ITU-R WP8F/WP5D for IMT-Advanced.

2008年由IEEE主办,中国电子学会、中国通信学会、清华大学、北京邮电大学共同协办的世界通信大会(International Conference on Communications, ICC 2008)5月19日至23日将在中国北京举行,今年会议的主题是“通信:更快、更高、更强”。借此机会,北邮校学术委员会、电信工程学院、信息工程学院等共同策划、组织ICC 2008北邮系列学术讲座,将陆续邀请到多位与会资深专家来我校作精彩的学术报告。本次活动是由电信院WT&T实验室发起,同时得到电信工程学院、信息工程学院等多个实验室的积极响应。
