As one of most common and aggressive means,denial-of-service (DoS) attacks cause serious impact on these computingsystems. In this paper, we present a DoS attack detection system that usesmultivariate correlation analysis (MCA) for accurate network trafficcharacterization by extracting the geometrical correlations between networktraffic features. Our MCA-based DoS attack detection system employs theprinciple of anomaly based detection in attack recognition.This makes our solution capable of detecting known and unknown DoS attackseffectively by learning the patterns of legitimate network traffic only.Furthermore, a triangle-area-based technique is proposed to enhance and tospeed up the process of MCA. The effectiveness of our proposed detection systemis evaluated, and the influences of both non-normalized data and normalizeddata on the performance of the proposed detection system are examined. Theresults show that our system outperforms two other previously developedstate-of-the-art approaches in terms of detection accuracy. Biography: Professor Xiangjian He, as a Chief Investigatorhas received various national Research Grants awarded by Australian ResearchCouncil (ARC). He is the Director of Computer Vision and Recognition Laboratoryand the leader of Network Security Research Team at the University of Technology,Sydney (UTS). He is an IEEE Senior Member. He has been awarded 'InternationallyRegistered Technology Specialist' by International Technology Institute (ITI).He has been carrying out research mainly in the areas of image processing,network security, pattern recognition and computer vision in the previousyears. He has played various chair roles in various international conferencesincluding IEEE CIT, IEEE AVSS and ICARCV. He is a guest editor for variousinternational journals such as Signal Processing and Journal of ComputerNetworks and Computer Applications (Elsevier), and in the editorial boards of severalinternational journals. He is a supervisor of postdoctoral research fellows andPhD students.
