AT&T said Wednesday that it has sent out e-mail notices to about 19,000 customers after the company discovered hackers had stolen credit card information from its online store.
The information was stolen last weekend. AT&T (nyse: T - news - people ) shut down the online store after discovering the security breach.
AT&T notified customers by e-mail and is working with law enforcement officials to track down the hackers.
"We recognize that there is an active market for illegally obtained personal information," said Priscilla Hill-Ardoin, AT&T's chief privacy officer. "We are committed to both protecting our customers' privacy and to weeding out and punishing the violators."
The company said it will pay for credit monitoring services to protect customers who purchased Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) equipment online from possible fraud.
AT&T provides Internet Protocol-based communications services to businesses and high-speed DSL, Internet, local and long-distance, directory and advertising services. It's one of the world's largest telecommunications holding companies. It has a 60% stake in Cingular Wireless, the nation's largest wireless company with about 57.3 million customers.
Meanwhile, RBC Capital Markets maintained its $28 price target and "sector perform" rating for AT&T's stock on Wednesday.
