1. Dear all: Recently, Zheng Wei, one of our brothers, has been building a website, providing the English reports on the great persons in the earthquake in Wenchuan. As media abroad always take negative, critical reports on us, even when we need help eagerly, it's necessary for us to introduce our efforts and love to foreigners. There are some articles in the website now, most of which are rewritten from domestic reports. However, as you know, translating stories into English isn't very easy—he needs heip.I think it's a meaningful project, I'd like to invite you to join in if you are have free time.Your classmates are also welcome if they are interested in it. Detailed requests can be known from the mail below and attachments he sent to me. 2. ou can take a look at the website on www.512story.com where you can find the examples you need for this kind of story. So the help I'm wanting from you is that you take a lead in helping collect rewritten stories from your classmates or your schoolmates. In this regards, I guess you will have some of those responsibilities if you don't mind: Choose one or two good and touching stories at the individual level either from what you read from the news or blogs or what you heard from others and rewrite them by yourself! Your rewritten stories will also be revised by our native language advisor which can help you improve your English writing ability. Promote this among your groups and invite them to rewrite stories: I strongly advise you to send out the invitation on a one-to-one basis which means you directly talk with those who you might know to ask them for the favor; also you can ask your classmate to ask their network. Consistently communication with our project team here in Beijing and have all those already rewritten stories in mind so that you can monitor those volunteers within your network not to do overlapped work; it would be much a pain if they have to call me here in Beijing; so I suggest you can help us do this to regularly check articles and coordinate volunteers' work. More responsibilities to come…… Regards, Zheng Wei 3.Dear all: We know currently everyone wants to help in this earthquake but sometimes we would feel powerless to in finding the channels but only through donations. And here is another way for every one of you to help by recording those effected individuals’ life story before, during and after the earthquake. This recording is a good way to memorize those who passed away and to encourage those who live strong; also it’s a great way to connect us with people from all nations who care us and want to understand more on an individual basis. Never before, has us been feeling so close with the people from other nations by overcoming this tremendous challenge all together; and it’s when comes to the life and death point that we begin to understand each other within nations on a common humanity basis. Please rewrite in English all the great stories you’ve read from the news or heard from people through their blogs/ or maybe just send us the original stories if you don’t have much time, and we’ll publish a collection of those great ones on the website www.512story.com to share with people from over all the place. Please note: your recomposition is still based on the facts but intends to create a better reading experience in another language; also we’d strongly advise you contact us before you are ready to do any rewriting so that we can ensure there is no overlap efforts. Your effort will help all of us to memorize and encourage those individuals affected by this trauma and will further help enhance the understanding between Chinese and other citizens by sharing stories about many common but great Chinese individuals in the earthquake. But for your great help, we’d also hope you would enjoy the following things: 1. All the rewritten stories adopted will be published on our website with your name as the rewriter along with original source and we’ll also try to find a volunteer artist to match your rewritten story with an illustrated picture; or you can also directly send related photos along with the rewritten story. Your rewritten story will potentially be spread among readers from many countries. 2. We are still actively seeking sponsorship opportunities for the project which means your great rewritten story might be able to get awards which we could help further divert to help the disaster relief according to your voluntary intent. 3. We’ll create a community for all contributors and help them connect with each other as we believe that all of us would enjoy being part of a group which cares and compassionates. We eagerly awaits your response at 512story@gmail.com ; and please feel free to write us if you have any further enquiries. May 17, 2008 512 Story Project Team About 4. 512 Story is big but small: it’s a life and death story of more than 200,000 people who are further related to one fifth of the world’s population and even more to all the brothers and sisters from all over the world; yet it’s also a story about each solo common individual: their story before, during and after the earthquakes as a common Chinese individual who has strong tolerance, lives strong and knows sacrifice. The story is not about politics or propaganda; it’s about 50,000 individuals who have passed away and another 150,000 who are living strong. It’s through each one of them that we saw how vulnerable human beings are in front of nature and how strong they are by showing their love and courage to each other. The recording aims to enhance the understanding between us and other nations through those many but unique individuals’ life story through all periods beside the earthquake; and it’s through both vulnerability and strength, fear and courage, commonness and greatness from those individuals that we find the common ground on a humanity basis and this common ground will bring us closer on a person to person level which goes beyond borders, races and stereotypes.
