Washington, D.C. -In a sign that a U.S. government program to combat global warming may now be considered a fait accompli among some oil giants, Shell Oil U.S. President John Hofmeister pledged the company's support for such a scheme.
"From a Shell point of view, the debate [about global warming] is over. ... We're not going to debate the science," Hofmeister said Monday in a speech before the National Press Club here.
Hofmeister said that Shell could live with a carbon cap and trade system and even a carbon tax, just as long as it was imposed across the economy and not targeted at energy producers.
As support for some federal government role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions has grown in recent years, the oil majors have jostled to position themselves regarding the issue.
Last year, BP (nyse: BP - news - people ) became the first major oil company to advocate carbon emissions reduction to combat global warming.
Meanwhile, Exxon Mobil (nyse: XOM - news - people ) has become a lightening rod in the debate. The oil giant disputes much of the climate change science and has funded research programs at top universities to explore the problem. Last September, the company was accused by the Royal Society of London of promoting misinformation about global warming.
