Seeing the world in a grain of sand
Actually, PhD is not wasting five years on a tiny area and writing something the public never understand. It is figuring out, from the very essence, how to tackle a real problem and how to be wise. That's why it is Doctor of Philosophy.
It is an ideal time to really focus and spend time thinking. Normally, people don't think, at least for much, especially when there are many distractions out there. So, not many people really understand how to solve problems independently and what is what and why things go around the way they are.
Also, once you've understood the essence of a specific thing--a grain of sand--you know the secrete to almost anything. Because, the underlying principals are few and apply to all. So, PhD is extremely limited and, at the same time, incomparably broad.
It is a chance for a glance into the depth of the world. Isn't it?
