应我校光通信与光电子学研究院张晓光教授、俞重远教授以及学术委员会的邀请,美国Alcatel-Lucent Bell实验室的刘翔博士分别在杭州和上海参加APOC2008与AOE国际会议以后,拨冗来我校参观,并作题为“现代与下一代光纤传输系统各种支撑技术”的学术报告。
刘翔博士在高速光纤通信领域享有盛誉,他是美国光学学会OSA光通信分会的副主席,IEEE高级会员。
刘翔博士与我校博士毕业生、全国百篇优秀博士论文提名奖获得者、叶培大先生的得意弟子谢重进博士是贝尔实验室的同事。刘翔博士1994年在中科院物理所获得硕士学位,随后去美国康乃尔大学深造,2000年获得博士学位。同年进入贝尔实验室从事光通信研究工作。至今已经获得30余项国际专利,发表140余篇研究论文,他的论文至今被引用超过了1000次。
刘翔博士以他多项创新性工作在国际上广受赞誉。去年光通信泰斗,贝尔实验室华裔科学家厉鼎毅先生来我校作报告,特别赞扬刘翔博士的研究工作是近期光通信界重大创新成果之一。

题目:Enabling Technologies for Modern and Next-Generation Optical Fiber Transport Systems(现代与下一代光纤传输系统各种支撑技术)

内容:The last few years have witnessed rapid advances in optical technologies for high-speed fiber transmission that have resulted in record-setting capacity-distance products and highly flexible and transparent optical networks. In this presentation, we review key enabling technologies used in optical terminals, repeaters, and link designs. More specifically, we summarize recent advances in optical modulation formats and their corresponding detection schemes, compensation of chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode dispersion mitigation, fiber nonlinearity management, and wavelength management. Emerging technologies based on digital coherent detection to compensate for transmission impairments will be particularly highlighted. The evolution trend of dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) optical fiber transport systems from 10-Gb/s per channel data rate to 40-Gb/s and even 100-Gb/s will also be discussed.

Bio:
Xiang Liu received the M.S. degree in Physics from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 1994, and the Ph.D. degree in applied physics from Cornell University in 2000. Since joining Bell Labs as a Member of Technical Staff in 2000, Dr. Liu has been primarily working on high-speed optical communication technologies including advanced modulation formats and detection schemes, fiber nonlinearity and dispersion management, and PMD mitigation. He has authored/co-authored more than 140 journal and conference papers, and holds over 30 international patents. His publications have been cited more than 1000 times. Dr. Liu is the Vice-Chair of the Optical Communications Technical Group of the Optical Society of America (OSA), and a senior member of the IEEE.
