1 Background ‘2006 Best Award for Student Research Report’ is organized by Intel China Research Center, with focuses on hot research topics in the area of advanced information science and technology. The call-for-paper will target PhD candidates in PRC universities, in order to explore top talents in science and engineering, and to encourage them to engage with high quality and creative research work in their graduate study, especially in research areas such as wireless communications technology, recognition technology, data mining, and data synthesis, as well as their applications, platforms and systems etc. The finalists will be invited to Beijing for the report-out and final judging process, with of a group of Intel Fellows and other senior experts in related areas. The top prizes are Intel®Centrino™ laptops. The winners will receive priority for internship and visiting research opportunities offered by Intel. The award ceremony will be co-located with 2006 Research Forum in early June. From this event, we would like to help the students gain an in-depth understanding of advanced information science and technology, enlarge their perspectives and greatly enhance their innovative capability. In addition, we expect the event will serve as a showcase for training high-quality talent through cooperation between university and industry. 2 Scope and Content of Research Report Students: The call-for-paper is mainly targeting PhD students in research of information sciences, and especially those senior postgraduates who have already commenced research independently. Requirements for research report: The research report should be created independently by a student, without infringing upon the intellectual property rights of others such as copyright and commercial secrets etc. Theme of research report: Pioneering study of contemporary information sciences A. Multi/Many core sub-theme A1. Parallel programming: paradigms, languages, compilation, optimization, tools A2. Runtime and operating systems A3. Parallel algorithm research in RMS (recognition, mining and synthesis) applications A4. Architecture design for high speed networking (high performance IO communications; smart cache and memory system) B. Wireless sub-theme B1. Wireless communication and networking B2. Mobile application and software execution environment 3 Application Sign Up: The participants should submit the following materials to Intel China Research Center: 1 Research report (in English) and abstract (both English and Chinese), and a presentation for 15-minute (in PowerPoint format). The total size of the documents should be within 5Mb. 2 The author’s brief resume (including specialty and interest, academic achievement, and awarded prizes) in both Chinese and English, enclosed with a photo (image size 130X170). 3 Experts’ recommendation letter in optional English and Chinese concerning the research of the report (one by thesis advisor and one by well-known expert in the related area). Please email all the materials to icrc@intel.com, with email subject of ‘2006 Best Award of Student Research Report’. Requirements on documents format: Please use Windows Word for the whole text of research report, PowerPoint for the presentation. The expert’s recommendation letter can directly be sent by email to icrc@intel.com, or by postal mail. Guidelines for finalists selection: 1) Does the proposal have originality and thoughtfulness on the proposed research problem? 2) Does the proposal creatively pursue the research problem it seeks to address? 3) Does the proposal detail a clear methodology for the proposed research? 4) Does the proposal answer a specific question? Winner selection metrics: The finalists will be invited to Beijing for the winner selection, in which they will present the research work and achievements to the judging panel. The top 3 winners will be selected by the judging panel on site based on the following metrics: Scientific/Engineering Goals 25 Points Creative Ability 25 Points Clarity 20 Points Knowledge 15 Points Thoroughness 15 Points Total Possible Score 100 Points Important date: May 19, the deadline of call-for-paper (being subject to the confirming date of receiving email). May 26, releasing list of finalists (the finalists will be invited to Beijing for the winner selection).
