A report released in June revealed that the total number of skyscrapers under construction in China had reached over 200, equivalent to the number in the United States.
Yet that's only the beginning.
The total number of skyscrapers here will top 800 in five years and crown China as the biggest 'skyscraper country' in the world, a goal that has raised concerns over the safety of the buildings, according to a report in China Comment on Monday.
Li Zhengnong, a professor at the Civil Engineering School of Hunan University, said Monday that high-rise buildings are susceptible to safety problems, since disasters in such buildings, especially fires, are difficult to cope with.
According to Li, aging walls, gas and water supply lines may lead to fires and even building collapses, making many high-rises built in the 70s and 80s unsafe to live in.
However, hidden dangers caused by human factors worry experts more.
Bad planning and substandard equipment have caused many tragic incidents, said Shuai Weihong, who supervises the Fire Bureau in South China's Hunan Province. He referred to an elevator incident two years ago in a building under construction in Changsha, where 18 people were killed and one was seriously injured.
Driven by extravagant profits, real estate developers sometimes choose cheap and unsafe elevators. Many of them don't even bother to hire elevator maintenance personnel for their projects.
The Party-run magazine commented that in the tidal wave of real estate development, various problems in design, construction, supervision and management have been emerging.
For example, regulations stipulate that there should be an emergency fire refuge for every 14 floors of a building, but many skyscrapers in China do not meet that standard. Some have even failed to install automatic fire alarms and extinguisher systems.
That's because loopholes in supervision often lead builders to 'cut corners' in construction.
In response, experts suggest that tightened laws and regulations must be introduced and applied to the industry and soundly enforced. Meanwhile, supervision and management of construction projects needs to be enhanced. At the same time, people should also be made aware of basic emergency procedures in case accidents occur.

Exactly. When we build one after one skyscraper, not only are the safety problems increasing, but we are losing our tradition, our Chinese tradition.
1 high-rise buildings are susceptible to safety problems
2 in case accidents occur
质疑一下这两句。。。。。
