The two universities will be the first higher education institutions to offer ‘double degrees’ (i.e. degrees awarded by both establishments) in China. The Chinese Ministry of Education has approved a unique joint programme between Queen Mary and BUPT. The programme will offer ‘double degrees’ to Chinese students, who will receive degrees from both partner institutions. The syllabus and teaching materials will be based on Queen Mary’s existing Electronic Engineering curricula, and subject to University of London quality assurance systems. All teaching will take place in China. Initial programmes will be offered in Telecommunications with Business Management and E Commerce Engineering with Management and Law – areas of priority for China and combinations of subjects not available at Chinese universities. Over 1000 students are expected to enrol by 2006. Over 500 Chinese students are already enrolled at Queen Mary, predominantly for under and post-graduate courses in Materials and Electronic Engineering. The majority of undergraduates have already completed two years of study at a Chinese university and come to the UK to finish their studies and graduate with a University of London qualification. Postgraduates usually complete their first degree in China before coming to the UK. These patterns of study are fairly typical, but the new Queen Mary/BUPT mode of study reflects the interests of Chinese students and institutions alike. A two year research Masters in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science will also be offered, with students spending their first year at BUPT, and the second at Queen Mary, consolidating existing research links between the two institutions. A joint research laboratory in wireless communication was recently established at BUPT, and is headed by Queen Mary’s Dr Xiaodong Chen. Professor Adrian Smith, Principal of Queen Mary, University of London said of the new programme. “I’ve never been a fan of the colonial one-way approach to the burgeoning higher education market in China. We’ve always adopted a collaborative style of working together, and I believe this is why we have been so successful at developing innovative projects with our Chinese colleagues. It’s a win-win situation for both parties. People shouldn’t underestimate the quality of Chinese universities - their students and standards are at least as good as those in the UK.” Professor Lin Jintong, President of BUPT, said “I am delighted with our partnership with Queen Mary which combines the resources, skills and talents of two great institutions. It represents a meaningful exchange between our two countries. There has been overwhelming demand from students for this programme, and the first year’s intake is now complete. All accepted students are of exceptional quality and meet China’s key universities’ entry requirements. BUPT Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, established in 1955, is globally renowned for its groundbreaking research and teaching in the field of Telecommunications, Electronic Engineering, and Computing. Since its founding, BUPT has consistently been ranked among the top 5 universities in China for IT and related subjects, and has officially been designated a ‘Key University’ by the Ministry of Education – a privilege conferred only to China’s top 100 institutions.
