Now it definitely becomes a global problem threatening every country in the world, including Ethiopia. We have seen AIDS can devastate families, communities and whole continents. We have seen the epidemic knock decades off countries' national development, widen the gulf between rich and poor nations and push already-stigmatized groups closer to the margins of society. As we are living in an “international” society, HIV has become the first truly “international” epidemic, easily crossing oceans and borders. Therefore, as one of the countries long suffered ravages of AIDS, Ethiopia believes that only international cooperation can guide our human beings to win the battle. Since Jan.1st 1996, in Geneva, the United Nations passed the plan to establish UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV /AIDS). Then in June 2001, it held a Special Session to galvanize political leadership and mobilize resources to deal with the AIDS epidemic. According to the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, "the General Assembly special session will provide us with an occasion as never before to face up to our responsibility to future generations, and take decisive action now to turn back the progress of this terrible disease." In Oct. 2007, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) carried out a mission to affected areas in order to support the mobilization of medical brigades and teams to fight epidemics. Fully aware of the importance of preventing AIDS, Ethiopia is always designed to fight against AIDS and believes that as long as all the nations can collaborate on this issue, “Stopping AIDS, Keep the promise” will not be a dream in the near future. As a result, since 2003, Addis Ababa has begun to host President’s AIDS Emergency Plan Annual Field Meeting. In order to promote fulfilling the promise on the prevention schemes, Ethiopia attended 2007 HIV Implementers; Meeting of the President’s Emergency Initiative for HIV/AIDS Relief to bring together a broad cross-section of AIDS implementers. What’s more, Ethiopia’s common people also join the movement of fighting against AIDS, such as the Under the serious situation, Ethiopia suggests that urgent national, regional and international action should be required, for the sake of global sustainable development and joint interests. Therefore, in the context of a individual nation, we call upon every suffered country carry out the similar launch of the Women’s Coalition against AIDS, which will effectively removes one of the potential causes for AIDS through the effort of your nation’s common people. To the degree of regional area, armed conflict can expand the spread of HIV and obstruct the task on stopping AIDS.
