[edit]Accelerated graphic cards
If you get an ATI or nVidia card running with acceleration, please write a Howto and link it to your card record.
Integrated i915G Intel GMA900 - all resolutions - works with QE, Core-Graphics/Image/Video (2D and 3D) (sony vaio fs550 - only 1024x768x32 - no QE no Core) :(
Integrated 82865G (device id 8086 2572 - match 0x25728086) - all resolutions - works with QE, Core-Graphics/Image/Video (2D and 3D). Not all versions, though (HP d530 works, IBM desktop doesn't), it's about luck
Silicon Image Orion ADD2-N Dual Pad x16 (DVI-AddOn card for i915G onboard chipset, made for HP p/n: DY674A)
[edit]VESA compatible unaccelerated cards
Try to set "Graphics Mode"="WidthxHeightxDept.", ex "GraphicsMode"="1280x1024x32"
If Darwin detects VESA 3.0 you can set the Refreshrate: "GraphicsMode"="1280x1024x32@85" Not on my Geforce FX 5600 VESA 3.0 1280x1024x32 max!
[edit]ATI
* Please visit ATI Drivers for progress on loading the ATI driver set.

Radeon 7200, Vesa 2.0 1280x1024x32
Radeon 7500, OpenGL works, no Quartz, Vesa 2.0 60Hz only
Radeon 8500 AIW - Vesa 2.0 1280 @ 60 Hz
Radeon 8500LE - Vesa 2.0 1280x1024 @ 60Hz
Radeon 9000/9200 Mobile - Vesa 3.0 1280
Radeon 9000 Pro - VESA 2.0 - 1024x768 only, no QE

Radeon 9200 - VESA 2.0 - 1280x1024x32 no QE, or acceleration
Radeon 9200 SE - Graphics look garbled when menus move (no 2d acc?) 1 working resolution 1024x768x32 60hz (Worked great for me, even changed resolutions)
Radeon 9250 - No QE, No CoreImage, VESA 2.0, 1024x768 at 60Hz
Radeon 9250 (PowerColor) - VESA 2.0, 1280x1024 at 60Hz
Radeon 9500 - The 9700 with the 4 pipelines disabled works fine for me
Radeon 9550 - No QE, No CoreImage, VESA 2.0, 1024x768 at 60Hz, 1280x1024 at 60 Hz
Sapphire Radeon 9550 (Recognized as 9600PRO) - VESA 2.0, 1024x768
Radeon 9600 AGP8x 256MB VRAM -No QE, No CI, Vesa 2.0 1024x768x32 at 60Hz, some glitches. Boot only in safe mode.
Radeon 9600 SE - No QE, No CoreImage, VESA 2.0 at 60Hz
Radeon 9600 Pro SE - VESA 2.0 at 60Hz, 1024, 1280, works with ATI extensions removed or -x (safemode)
Radeon 9600XT - Vesa 2.0, 1280, 60Hz

Radeon Mobility 9600 -Remove all ATI* files on extensions folder to avoid yellow death screen.
Radeon Mobility 9700 - Vesa 2.0. Delete all ATI* files on extensions folder to avoid yellow death screen.
Radeon Mobility 9800 - Vesa 2.0. Remove all ATI*.kext in /System/Library/Extensions.
Radeon Mobility FireGL T2 - Bootloader sees card as Mobility 9700 w/ 128mb VRam, behaves just like Mobility 9700. Reason for drivers not loading correctly is that the AGP-PCI bridge driver doesn't load. You must find the VID and DID of your Bridge driver and add it to AppleI386PCI.kext for the ATI driver to load. Problem is that even with the driver kext loading correctly my display comes up purple tinged and still not video accelerated, so more work is needed.
Radeon Mobility X600 PCIe - VESA 2.0 stuck on 1024x768x32, no other options available. - I'm using it at 1400x1050x32. Could you explain how?

Radeon X300 (Inspiron 6000) - No QE but 2d acceleration works.
Radeon X300-SE PCIe - VESA 2.0 , stuck on 1024x768x32 (setting any other graphics mode causes 'frequency out of range') 2d works.
Sapphire X600 Pro (You have to delete all card drivers) - VESA 2.0 1024x768
Radeon X700-series PCIe - VESA 3.0 1600x1200 at 60Hz --- How? On my laptop, I'm only able to get 1024x768 --> do not use refresh rate tag

C-media AC97 9880 series (featured on some Gigabyte boards) - sound works but stutters under iTunes (SSE3 P4 3.6GHz), volume control doesn't work, only one output
C-Media 8738 PCI audio codec (kernel extension here. (http://members.tripod.de/candyass/CMI8738PCIAudioDriver-0.6.4.tar.gz) src here. (http://members.tripod.de/candyass/CMI8738PCIAudioDriver-0.6.4-src.tar.gz) Open a terminal, cd to the download directory, tar xzvf CMI8738PCIAudioDriver-0.6.4.tar.gz, ./install.sh, enter your root password and you're done - though you might need to change the .tar.tar extension to .tar.gz.)
C-Media USB Audio (no additional drivers required).

Creative Audigy 2 NX (USB) (Sound stutters under load though)
Creative SB Live! 24-Bit External USB

Edirol FA-66 (same as FA-101 above and Presonus Firepod)
Griffin iMic - USB, so it bypasses the problems of soundcard drivers
Griffin Radioshark

Presonus Firepod (see edirol FA-101 above in the list)
Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA a.k.a VT8235 (Works - left channel only, if you have pitched sound set the Output to 48 KHz). <- Work greats, thanks to whoever found the trick. To set 48Khz, Application -> Utilities -> Audio MIDI Setup. Change from 44.1KHz to 48KHz. ALAS!
Realtek ALC658 (onboard Gigabyte K8VT800 and other mobos) - works perfect! MUST set output to SPDIF in control panel and pull out the speaker cord just a little bit to get stereo sound. <-- WTF pulling it a bit out would just make one channel go to both speakers... <-- not on SPDIF: optical <-- I have the mb k8vt800 pls send me the audio kext to jdesign @ gmail . com I need sound!!!
Realtek ALC655
Realtek ALC850 (nForce Audio)(requires kext plist file edit) - Velvet Nightmare - I did not have to do a kext edit to get sound to run, it was working stock, no edits to anything required.
Dan the Soundman - on my p4dual-915gl (s478)ALC850 works fine out of the box. If you go into audio/midi setup you can enable 6 outputs in the aggeregate device section(havnt tested any apps with it yet tho).

Realtek ALC855
RME FIREFACE 800 FIREWIRE ......and just download from there sight the "fireface_x86.gz" driver Mac OS X Intel (10.3 or up) driver for Fireface 800. Fully functional, with audio, TotalMix, Settings and MIDI. Only x86, not PowerPC compatible! Pre-release. (07/18/2005)

Sonica Theater (USB) (coax out works) no volume support stuck on high
SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio (AC97), only the left channel works via Mic Input
SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio (AC97)/Intel Integrated Audio - this chip is funky on my system, both the SoundMax and Intel drivers work fine, more importantly I get full stereo sound from the speaker output. It could be a fluke that this works, as I believe it is actually a Intel ICH6 AC'97. I'll look some more into it.
VIA VT8233, VT8237 only the left channel works
Yamaha AC-XG
USB Speakers from G4 Cube, cut off the speakers and use the audio jack output. Works perfectly! (so you cut off the usb, and used the jack, doesnt that jack come from a soundcard...)

If you have a ps2 keyboard, you need a ps2 mouse as well for the ps2 driver for both to load. Plugging in a ps2 keyboard with a usb mouse won't work.
That's odd. I have a USB Keyboard and PS2 Mouse and they both work together.
Most motherboards emulate a PS/2 keyboard when USB KB/Mouse support is enabled in the BIOS. Effectively you are running a PS/2 kb and PS/2 mouse, so the driver loads and they both work.

Although this doesn't belong here but some people insist in it:
The Apple Developer Platform mainboard is a custom made version of Intels D915GUX mainboard with Firewire (optional to the original D915GUX) and Intel 82562EZ NIC chipset (the variant D915GUXLK with Marvells 88E8050 NIC chipset does not have network support in osx). The onboard ALC860 Azalia (HD Audio) chipset is the same as in the devkit but doesn't work for me with osx. Jack sensing doesn't work on the devkit, jack reassign doesn't work too, microphone in doesn't work, headphone out doesn't work, only line in and line out work on the devkit. Power saving will not turn off the cpu fan. The kit is delivered with version 450 of Intels BIOS although Intel offers only version 444 for download, maybe 450 will be a non-public release for apple only.
[edit]Almost Full Working Motherboards
ABit AN8 SLI (Sound, PS2, Firewire working, LAN non working. SATA & SLI Mode untested)
Abit NF8 socket 754 nForce3 ALL BUT LAN/AUDIO (SATA NOT TESTED)
ASRock P4S61, onboard VESA 3 graphics, USB tested with pen drive, PS2 works fine. Used xplodenet guide for native and vmware. Not tested network or sound properly yet.
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe, native install works great. No onboard lan, use AC97 Audio Guide for getting audio to work (and also lookup commands to permanently save audio settings), PS2 works. I used xplodes guide to set it up. OSX keeps giving a 'you need to restart' window on startup if overclocked too high.
Asus K8V SE Deluxe, LAN does not work, Audio left channel only (How did you get it to work?) (The K8V Deluxe right below uses the same audio chip ADI AD1980 and its supposed to work. Also compatible under "Sound" is AD1985 which seems close enough. Has anyone managed to get AD1980 to fully work with the K8V SE Deluxe? how?), PATA&SATA ok
Asus K8V Deluxe, Gbit LAN does not work, Audio works with default drivers (both channels) (how did you get it to work? optical out?), PATA&SATA ok (I get only left channel sound)
Asus 845GE-V All works, but have funny in sound. It use AD1980 too, You need load AppleAC97Audio.kext and AppleAC97AudioIntelICH.kext. And the driver use *mic* port to output sound.
Asus A8V (Via SATA/PATA, USB2.0 full-speed, firewire and onboard Audio are working, Onboard LAN and Promise PATA/SATA doesn't work)
Asus P4C800 Deluxe (non -E version) Lan and promise Sata don't work, USB, Firewire, Sound and Intel Sata OK!
Asus P4G8X Deluxe: Silicon Image SATA does not work. sound, usb, firewire, gigabit lan all working.
Asus P4P800-E Deluxe every works except LAN
Asus P4S800D-E Deluxe SIS655FX Chipset SATA and Gbit Lan don't work
Asus P4S533 w/ SIS645DX Chipset, Native booting install works with some coaxing, ("Platform=X86PC -x" to install, just platform to boot) LAN doesn't work, USB, IDE1,2, USB, CM8738 Sound works, seems reliable (>7hr no problems).
Asus P5AD2-E Deluxe ATX Intel 925XE (IDE,S-ATA,Audio,USB 2.0,FIREWIRE) Prescott Support (Onboard LAN NOT working)
Asus P5GDC-V Deluxe. Graphics (with QE & CG), Sound (no volume control), Firewire, USB working. Network (Marvel Yukon), IDE (ITE) RAID Controllers don't work.
Asus P5P800, I865PE, Socket-775, ATX SATA, GbLAN (Onboard LAN NOT working)
Asus P4SD-VX,i865PE, Southbridge Intel 82801EB (ICH5) rev. 02(On board lan, sound, usb, ide, firewire are ok)
Asus P4PE, 845PE, (on board lan OK, sound semi-OK (output through mic jack), usb OK, ide OK, firewire OK, Promise SATA raid not working - needs to have Plug'n'play OS turned off in BIOS for sound and ethernet to work plus platform=x86pc
AOpen i915Ga-E (IDE, USB2 and Integrated Graphics works, Onboard Sound and Onboard LAN don't works. SATA not tested and LAN working with a cheap RTL8139B PCI card)
CFI (Chyang Fun) E-Cube S868A SFF PC (IDE, USB, Ethernet, still fiddling with onboard sound, onboard gfx untested - using geforce 5200 on AGP slot)
Chaintech VNF4 Ultra (IDE, Audio, USB working, SATA, LAN does not work)
DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250GB (IDE and USB works, SATA does not) (Onboard nVidia lan and Sound does not work, but saound can be fixed and network you can buy a cheap and simple Realtek like I did!)
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4-D (IDE and USB works) (Marvell and nVidia lan does not work)
ECS ELITEGROUP 755-A2 with SiS 964 South Bridge. USB2.0 works. Audio loads but crashes because of SiS 964 south bridge. Ethernet doesn't work. OSX works fine other than that.
ECS ELITEGROUP 661FX-M. Onboard Ethernet/Sound/Firewire don't work. Everything else seems to work with a bit of tweaking.
Epox 9npaJ NF4 (IDE, Audio, & USB working - SATA & LAN does not work)
ECS 648FX-A with SiS648FX Northbridge and SiS963L Southbridge (No LAN, Sound, Cannot get CD-Rom to work on 2nd channel. USB works fine though.)
Gigabyte GA 8SRX (seems quite stable with IDE, PCI USB/Firewire ALi chipset card-USB works fine, haven't tried 1394 yet, Realtek RTL8139 PCI card works for broadband, onboard SB sound doesn't work, Matrox G400 AGP dual-head works (see VESA graphic cards 'other' above for latest), LG GA4040B seems to work fine but haven't burned anything yet)
Gigabyte 8KNXP - Socket478 P4 board using i875P chipset - incurs high CPU usage with Rosetta and other OSX stuff - poor benchmark results.
Gigabyte GA-8I915P DUAL GRAPHIC - USB works. Sound OK. PS2 Keyboard OK. No SATA, Does not work if HDD is on IDE Raid Controller (Use other onboard IDE controller), No Network (Marvell)
Gigabyte 8i915G Duo - S775 - incurs high CPU usage with Rosetta and other OSX stuff - iTunes unworkable - poor xbench results. Take HDD and plug it into a non-Gigabyte board and the problem vanishes. Appears to be BIOS code related.
Gigabyte SIS-chipset S478 board (model escapes me) - problems as above. STAY AWAY FROM GIGABYTE FOR OSX86 boxes!!
Intel 845BG Desktop Board (6 PCI Slots) (IDE, USB, LAN, Sound all work; PS2 and VGA untested, USB Boot did not work)
Intel I915GUXL S775 DDR II M-ATX BOX (Installed from patched DVD, really clean installation, works perfectly, audio, video, CI + QE)
K8T Neo-FIS2R (K8T800 IDE, LAN, Audio(left channel only) PATA&SATA Firewire and USB2)
Mach Speed Viper K8M8M - sound only works left channel.
Mach Speed Viper K8M8MS
Magic Pro MP-K8AM-G Pro (VGA, USB, Firewire, LAN, IDE works) (SATA, Audio NOT work)
Matsonic MS9107C+ Series - VIA P4X333 - (No Sound)
MSI K8T Master2 FAR (ATA,USB,NoLan,NoSound) eMachines T1740 Motherboard (ATA, LAN, No USB, No Sound)
Soyo 845PE ISA (AC97 audio does not work. Everything else including USB2.0 and on-board networking works, detected and works great.)
Soyo SY-P4VTE (No LAN)
Soyo SY-P4X400 DRAGON Lite (IDE, LAN, realtek 8139, USB, Audio doesn't function.)
Via P4PB 400 Everything but onboard Lan(Via Rhine III)/Audio(AC97) works.
Foxconn 915M07-G-8EKRS All work(QE/CG/LAN/SOUND)but 1394 doesn't
Intel D875PBZ - OSX is very unstable(5-10 minutes of running at most), can't boot OSX with any usb device plugged in. After it boots i plugg in the mouse. Used with GeForce FX5950Ultra Leadtek.

GeForce2 MX 100/200 (maybe 400) - Loads the NVDA*.kext files with errors and then freezes at the next step (tested with -x -v -s) <-- if anyone knows a fix please edit (My Gforce2 is working fine as default(SaLaSa on irc)).
Radeon 9200 PCI MAC EDITION - Cannot detect hardware - system will not load display drivers, black screen
Intel i855GM - No driver provided by Apple but MacOSX tries to use the driver for i830. Removing the the i915* and i830*-KExts makes booting in normal mode possible. Safe mode (-x) should work without modifications. This Chip is used in many Centrino-Laptops btw.
The following cards crashing are likely caused by osx loading a driver for this card. Remove ATI related drivers from the /System/Library/Extensions folder to try using it in VESA mode:
Sapphire Radeon 9600xt - Crash on startup (Kernel Panic)
Radeon 9600pro - Crash on startup (found in safe mode. run in -x)
Radeon 9600 AIW - Kernel panic
Radeon RV100 QY - Crash on startup
Radeon 9700Pro - Crash on startup (works with -x or with ATI extensions removed)
Radeon 9800 mobility - Crash on startup (works with -x or with ATI extensions removed)
Sapphire Radeon 9600xt - Crash on startup (Kernel Panic) - Works on safe boot.
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro - Crash on startup (Works for me!) (Works; must delete ATI kexts in /System/Library/Extensions)
Sapphire Radeon X600 Pro - Crash on startup (Kernel Panic)
Jetway Radeon 9600XT - Crash on startup (Kernel Panic) - Works in safe boot mode; Works in normal boot mode if /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* are removed.
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro - crash on startup - works in safe boot mode, works in normal boot mode if ATI* extensions are removed (1024x768 only)
GeForce 5950Ultra Leadtek - Can't change resolution(1024x768) to the lcd native one even with boot parameters. OSX very unstable. Graphic acceleration works good with extremely minor drawing problems. <-
