Heterogeneous communications and cloud computing in Internet of Things
Application deadline: 19 March 2016.
1. Project summary
The ubiquitous interconnection of embedded devices with Internet infrastructure has made the remote monitoring and control of sensors and devices possible and has brought new research theme to the forefront: the Internet-of-Things (IoT). Future IoT networks are rapidly developing to include a large diversity of communication entities, including novel sensor devices, vehicles, wearables and other intelligent electronic appliances. This project will focus on innovative research in developing heterogeneous communications and cloud computing infrastructure to deal with machine-to-machine, machine-to-human or human-to-human information production, exchange, and processing.
2. Research skills
The accepted candidates will work on exciting research problems at the intersection of wireless sensor networks, body area networks, vehicular networks and edge/cloud computing. The research will be characterized by a theoretical analysis of the problems and innovative solutions, as well as by an experimental and simulation study, to investigate the performance of the proposed solutions. A potential candidate should have strong background in at least one (and preferably more than one) of the following skills:
1) Knowledge of wireless communication and networking technologies, especially the communication network architectures and protocols.
2) Mathematical knowledge, such as cross-layer optimization, stochastic process and probability theory, to characterize wireless communications and network problems.
3) Program skills of wireless network simulators, such as OMNeT++, NS-2/3 and MATLAB.
4) General principles of software programming in C/C++ and Java to develop embedded system (e.g., smart sensor platform) and edge/cloud computing modules.
The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with world-class academic and industrial partners. The knowledge and skills learned from this project will help the candidate to purse jobs in information and communication technology (ICT) industry or academia.
3. Funding information
Under the Sussex/CSC Joint Scholarship Scheme, Sussex will cover full tuition, bench fees, subject to applicants obtaining CSC support. CSC will provide a living allowance.
