Abstract: The Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) emerges into the mainstream of the medical implant communication services, where sets of sensors and actuators are embedded/attached to the human body in order to provide various services. These services include continuous and remote health monitoring with real-time updates of medical records, computer assisted rehabilitation, early detection of medical conditions, artificial immune system creation, or paralyzed muscle stimulation. The embedded/attached sets of sensors and actuators in the human body are designed and configured such that they collect the desired physiological data related to this individual without regard to the time and location, and whether the body is moving or still. This new field of Wireless Body Area Networks WBAN requires a high level of security, privacy and reliability to make them viable. Moreover, in order to improve the system lifetime, it is essential to ensure that the communication between the mounted sensor/actuator nodes, wearable relay nodes and sink/controller node takes place in the right way. In WBAN, the dynamic nature of the human body, complexity of the human tissues structure and body shape give variation to the traditional radio channel making difficult the design and the development of lightweight and context-aware communication protocols that are able to reduce energy consumption, and packet loss rate while achieving a reasonable/acceptable trade-off between reliability, cost and efficiency. Therefore, this talk will give an overview of Wireless BAN challenges and solutions in designing reliable WBAN systems with real-time anomaly detection for remote healthcare monitoring.
