Ultrafast fiber lasers for information processing
With photonic technologies, signals are being acquired at speeds largely exceeding electronic capabilities. Thanks to short‐pulse fiber lasers, we can now examine in detail the response of biological tissue or observe in high resolution distortions of communication signals. This optical sampling technology is useful for the development of new measurement tools for an array of applications, from life sciences to high‐speed transmissions. In parallel, the same high‐speed fiber lasers allow information to be coded within a single pulse and later recognized even through noise. The proposed project aims at developing short‐pulse fiber lasers that possess novel properties in terms of repetition rate, pulse duration and noise properties. Specifically, the goal of the research is to achieve versatile laser sources whose parameters can be tuned over a larger range to offer users greater flexibility. We are seeking a student eager to contribute to the field of ultrafast laser science and its applications. The work will be performed at the Optical Communications Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Sophie LaRochelle, at the Centre for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL). The project is part of an international collaboration between the COPL and the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire de Physique (LIPhy – CNRS – Université Joseph Fourier), located in Grenoble, France.
A scholarship is available: $24,000/year for a PhD and $21,000/year for a Master’s. Scholarships for foreign tuition fees are also available at PhD level.
