Dear Mr Xiao Bie San,
I will try to give you more information about the decision of the Graduate E
ducation Committee. As I said earlier, we had an unusual number of highly q
ualified applicants this year. The fact that we did not offer you a fellowsh
ip is not in any way a criticism of your record or your application but a re
sult of the high level of the applications this year. Unfortunately, we will
not have other fellowships available until the fall term of 2003-2004.
Your GRE scores are outstanding. Your TOEFL score is reasonable. You should
not worry about that. Your grades in your earlier years of Medical School (
1993-1995) are not too good, but after that they improve a lot. We did not b
ase our decision on your GPA. The fact that you were accepted into the Maste
r's Program at ****** University (a school that I know is one of the best i
n China) is much more important than your early grades in medical school.
How can you improve your application? I can make a few suggestions. First, y
ou will automatically have a stronger application next year because you will
have your Master's degree completed. You will have the diploma, the transcr
ipts, and perhaps a publication. One of the things that made some of the oth
er applications stand out is that several had already completed their Master
's Degree and had one or two (or four - one student) publications. You will
also have part of a year of post-graduate experience.
Second, you should continue to work on doing research and working closely wi
th a professor. This will help your record and will also provide an opportu
nity for getting the strongest possible letter of recommendation. The thing
the committee is looking for is a sign that this applicant can be successful
in a situation where he must be somewhat independent. The master's disserta
tion, research publications, and letters of reference can all give informati
on about an applicant's ability to be independent. Also, at the present sta
ge of your career it can be very helpful to have a professor who will give y
ou advice about your overall career rather than simply telling you what tech
niques to use and how to analyze the data. It is sometimes not easy to find
such a professor. If you have trouble, don't give up. Keep looking.
Finally, read and write English as much as you can. Read scientific papers,
read novels, read newspapers. Your biographical essay was a little above th
e middle of the applications. It caught the attention of members of the com
mittee. However, when you apply again to our school or other schools, try to
make the essay 50% to 100% longer (about two pages). Use the personal story
that you used this year, but also write more about the research projects yo
u have worked on in your Master's Degree program and the reading you have do
ne.
I hope this advice helps you. It is not a guarantee that you will get into a
graduate school in the United States. However, I think these suggestions wi
ll help you in any direction your road takes you. I can feel that you have a
strong wish to be in academic medicine and to help medicine move forward. I
am sure you will eventually be successful, although the road may have some
difficult places in it.
With best regards,
Brukers Roof
