Structural health monitoring (SHM) is widely deployed in crucial structures of facilities or machines, such as aircraft, ships, high-rise buildings, dams, and bridges. SHM can monitor subtle changes in the material and geometric characteristics of engineering structures, so it possesses the potential to increase structural life and improve public safety. Since wireless sensor networks have the advantages of high reliability, and low installation and maintenance costs, SHM assisted with wireless sensor networks has attracted much attention. In addition, SHM based on wireless sensor networks also faces many barriers, such as network scalability, wireless sensor network time synchronization, sensor deployment, energy and efficiency, as well as security and reliability. All these issues need to be tackled by the joint research of scholars and experts in the field. This Special Collection expects to help advance the research of SHM based on wireless sensor networks, promote the further discussion and resolution of the aforementioned problems, and propel the practical application of SHM. The study of these issues has risen a new field with rich research and innovation potential. This Special Collection aims to explore all these topics and invite contributions from leading researchers around the world. Topics of interest for this Special Collection include but are not limited to the following, in the context of wireless sensor networks for structural health monitoring: Security and reliability Network scalability Power and energy consumption Sensor deployment Time synchronization Practical applications across a variety of structures and facilities The submitted manuscripts for this Special Collection will be peer-reviewed before publication.
