Their ability to mimic human-like interaction is both fascinating and testament to advancements in the field. However, a noteworthy limitation observed across this landscape is their predominantly reactive nature. The essence of proactiveness—embodied by initiating conversations, transitioning across topics, and giving contextualized suggestions etc.—is notably absent. My research centres on improving it via two questions: What are the underlying principles of humans understanding conversation context as well as making proper responses, and how we can realize them on Large Language models? Research on this topic has to necessarily be at the intersection of Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing and Multimedia.
