Now, we know that building full language capability is as complex as automating human intelligence.But we have also learned to find ‘niches of functionality’—specific applications and domains in which a carefully limited form of language and speech processing is perfectly good and commercially feasible. The growth of the Internet and the Grid provide many opportunities for such niches. What are these niches? The talk describes how funding agencies and research groups in North America and Europe are positioning themselves to exploit new niche opportunities by working in two directions: component/tool technologies and a series of core applications. 此报告为前沿讲座，欢迎全校师生踊跃参加。校学术委员会计算机学院 2008年10月21日报告人的简历： Dr. Eduard Hovy received his Ph.D. in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) at Yale University in 1987. He is now the director of the Natural Language Group at Information Sciences Institute(ISI), University of Southern California, director of the Center for Knowledge Integration and Discovery (CKID) which is one of four research centers funded by the Department of Homeland Security of USA, director of Research for the Digital Government Research Center (DGRC) which is one of three NSF-supported centers in the USA. His research focuses on Natural Langauge Peocessing, automated text summarization, information extraction, the semi-automated construction of large lexicons and ontologies, machine translation, question answering, and digital government. Dr. Hovy regularly serves in an advisory capacity to funders of NLP research in the US and EU. He is the author or co-editor of five books and over 180 technical articles. In 2001 Dr. Hovy served as President of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) which is one of the most important academic organization in this field, he also served as President of the International Association of Machine Translation (IAMT). He currently serves as President of the Digital Government Society of North America ( DGSNA ). Dr. Hovy regularly co - teaches a course in the Master’s Degree Program in Computer Science at the University of Southern California, as well as occasional short courses on MT and other topics at universities and conferences. He has served on the Ph.D. and M.S. committees for students from USC, Carnegie Mellon University, and so on.
