Leung IEEE Fellow, Telus Mobility Research Chair in Advanced Telecom Engineering (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada) 内容摘要： Over the past few years, the research programs in wireless networking at the University of British Columbia under the direction of Prof. Victor Leung have been proceeding in two major directions. One thrust is concerned with providing ubiquitous access to the global network to people regardless of where they are located and how they access the global network. The research in this area involves the development of novel techniques to provide efficient and secure access to and across heterogeneous for multimodal terminals for multimedia applications. The second thrust is concerned with networking machines using short range wireless communications. We have developed various methods for personal area networking and wireless sensor networking, and are proceeding with new work on RFID and wireless body area networks. A summary of the wide range of completed, ongoing and emerging research projects under these research programs will be presented. 题目二：Cross-Layer Design for Quality of Service Provisioning in Wireless Networks（无线网络中保证QoS的跨层设计机制）主讲人：Professor Fei Richard Yu (School of Information Technology, Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, Canada) 内容摘要： The layered structure is one of the key reasons behind the success of the Internet. However, cross-layer design is appropriate and may even be necessary in wireless networks due to their intrinsic characteristics, such as limited bandwidth, user mobility and power constraints. Recently, cross-layer design for wireless multimedia networks has become a hot-topic in both academia and industry. Cross-layer optimization is a new frontier in the field of wireless communications, which will result in new algorithms and significantly improved performance for wireless networks, such as sensor networks, cellular networks, cognitive radio and WiMAX. In this talk, we consider cross-layer design for quality of service (QoS) provisioning in wireless networks. Specifically, we propose novel cross-layer schemes taking into account both physical layer fading channels and application layer packet multimedia traffic. By considering the interplay of different layers, we show that the network performance can be increased significantly. (Hons.) degree in electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia (U.B.C.) in 1977, and was awarded the APEBC Gold Medal as the head of the graduating class in the Faculty of Applied Science. He attended graduate school at U.B.C. on a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Postgraduate Scholarship and completed the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1981. From 1981 to 1987, Dr. Leung was a Senior Member of Technical Staff at Microtel Pacific Research Ltd. (later renamed MPR Teltech Ltd.), specializing in the planning, design and analysis of satellite communication systems. He also held a part-time position as Visiting Assistant Professor at Simon Fraser University in 1986 and 1987. In 1988, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Electronics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He returned to U.B.C. as a faculty member in 1989, where he is currently a Professor and the holder of the TELUS Mobility Industrial Research Chair in Advanced Telecommunications Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is a member of the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems at U.B.C. He also holds a Guest Professor appointment at Jilin University, China. Dr. Leung has authored/co-authored more than 350 technical papers in international journals and conference proceedings. His research interests are in the areas of architectural and protocol design and performance analysis for computer and telecommunication networks, with applications in satellite, mobile, personal communications and high speed networks. Dr. Leung is a registered professional engineer in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a voting member of ACM. He serves on the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications , the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, the IEEE Transactions on Computers, the International Journal of Sensor Networks and the International Journal of Communication Networks and Distributed Systems. He has guest-edited several journal special issues, and served on the technical program committee of numerous international conferences. He is the TPC chair of the wireless networks and cognitive radio track of IEEE VTC-fall 2008 in Calgary, AB. He was the General Chair of QShine 2007 in Vancouver, BC, and Symposium Chair for Next Generation Mobile Networks in IWCMC’07 in Honolulu, Hawaii and IWCMC’06 in Vancouver, BC. He received the PhD degree in electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, in 2003 with Prof. Victor Leung as the supervisor. From 2002 to 2004, he was with Ericsson (in Lund, Sweden), where he worked on the research and development of dual mode UMTS/GPRS handsets. From 2005 to 2006, he was a R&D director with a start-up founded by two former Vice Presidents of Qualcomm in California, USA. He also held a position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with UBC in 2005 and 2006. He joined Carleton School of Information Technology and the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada in 2006. Dr. Yu has authored/co-authored more than 50 technical papers in world’s journals and conference proceedings; in the last three years alone, he had about a dozen journal papers mostly in IEEE periodicals. He received a best paper award at the International Conference on Networking 2005.
