There are two set phrases I wanna introduce today. The first one is "elephant in the room", which is also sometimes used as "elephant in the living room". It means a significant problem that can be easily recognized but is deliberately neglected. Let's assume that there's a classroom with litter everywhere but students get used to it and noboday stands out to sweep. The teacher may consider this as the elephant in the room, and talk to another teacher "what can I do to deal with the elephant in the room" to seek advice. Of course, when using this phrase, you shall have the listener exactly know what the elephant in the room indicates. The phrase will otherwise lead to confusion.
直訳すると、「部屋にいる象」となる。象が部屋にいれば、誰も見るに間違いないが、象が部屋にいないように振舞う人々が、無視することを選択している。だから、日本語に訳せば、認識しながら無視している重要な問題となる。この決まった表現から、その意味を類似するような「dinosaur in the room」を造るのかもしれないね。
The other phrase is "have the good opinion of". The phrase itself might not be as difficult as you thought. Here is the point, what becomes of the meaning if "the" is changed to "a". In other words, what's the difference between "have the good opinion of" and "have a good opinion of"? Similar phrase pairs exist, such as "in charge of" and "in the charge of". The difference will make clear to you after reading the following two sentences. 1. We have a good opinion of Tom. 2. The Americans are histerically anxious to have the good opinion of others. 3. Tom is in charge of this department. 4. The department is in the charge of Tom.
aかtheかで、英語で意味は大きくなるものだ。「have a good opinion」は「～をよく思う」と、「have the good opinion」は「よく思われる」となる。見ての通り「the」を用いて受身の意味をしている。「in the charge of」は同じで、「担当される」という感じになる。やはり英語で細かいところを無視してはならないね。
