Google Chief Joins Apple Board Burlingame, Calif. - Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt joined a list of several corporate notables by taking a seat as the eighth director on the board of Apple Computer, the computer company announced Tuesday. “We think [Schmidt's] insights and experience will be very valuable in helping to guide Apple in the years ahead,” Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in a statement. Apple's board already includes Genentech (nyse: DNA - news - people ) Chief Executive Arthur Levinson, Intuit (nasdaq: INTU - news - people ) Chief Executive Bill Campbell, Harwinton Capital Chief Executive Jerry York, former vice president of the United States Al Gore, and Fred Anderson, former Apple chief financial officer and current partner with Elevation Partners, a minority owner of Forbes Media. Schmidt, who took the helm at Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) in 2001, has a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley and has worked at Xerox's (nyse: XRX - news - people ) famed PARC lab and at Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ). Google, which dominates the Internet search advertising industry, and Apple, which rules both the portable music player business and the online music market, haven't collaborated on any projects in the past; the two companies do compete in the online video business. Pundits have frequently speculated that Google has plans to enter the online music market. Google executives have repeatedly said they have no interest in launching their own music service. Google has already forged revenue-sharing relationships with computer makers Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ) and Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ), allowing for Google to pre-install software on new PCs. The Dell deal, announced in late May, is worth about $1 billion, according to CIBC World Markets Analyst Paul Keung. Apple's stock was up 0.6% in after-hours trading.
