Paris-based Alcatel announced on Friday that it will acquire Nortel Networks's radio access business for $320 million, pending necessary approvals.
As a result of the deal, Nortel's customers could double Alcatel's radio access market share to approximately 15%, according to Standard & Poor's Equity Research analyst Clara Van de Elst.
The analyst also said trouble may loom for the pending merger of Alcatel and Lucent Technologies (nyse: LU - news - people ), originally announced in March.
"We believe that following disappointing second-quarter results at Lucent, there is increased likelihood that Alcatel shareholders next week will fail to approve the planned merger with Lucent," she said.
Alcatel (nyse: ALA - news - people ) shares could see a lift if the Lucent deal isn't completed, the analyst said.
Standard & Poor's Equity Research maintained a "hold" opinion on Alcatel American depositary receipts
The Nortel deal is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2006.
